pnbspEaston will again be draped in green as the town celebrates the 30th anniversary of St. Patricks Day events in Easton. The second largest event in Talbot County the celebration will bring back the Potato Racewith teams running around the town square with potatoes in spoons the grand parade with bagpipes marchers and more.Other events will include ecumenical church services traditional Irish tea childrens games and crafts and various restaurant celebrations throughout the day.brbrThe event came to life 30 years ago when Will Howard and his partners in the former Chambers Restaurant talked about how to celebrate the date.brbrbrI asked Mayor Murphy our Irish mayor if we could change the name of Dover Street to Irish Avenue and have a parade Howard said. The Mayor and Council agreed. Michael Feeheeley one of Howards partners suggested a potato race around the parade route to follow. The event has grown from those years to an annual crowd of more than 1000 persons joining the celebrations. The Star Democrat and radio station WCEI are co-sponsors of the event as they were in 1982.brbrbrThe ecumenical church service will start at 130 p.m. at New Oasis Covenant Church at 216 Goldsborough St.brbrbrThe traditional Irish tea service will return to the Historical Society of Talbot County Auditorium located upstairs at 17 S. Washington St. The tea is free to all and features traditional favorites like Irish soda bread cookies scones and other fun treats. Tea services runs from 2 to 4 p.m. Donations for the tea services or volunteer help are now being accepted. Eastons favorites games and crafts for kids will be back such as the potato sack race book balance and potato race.brbrbrBefore the parade begins there will be a Potato Relay race that kicks off at 415 p.m. on Washington Street between Dover and Goldsborough streets. The race is supported by the Talbot County Chamber Young Professionals. WCEI radio will return as master of ceremonies with Matt Spence giving on-location spud-to-spud coverage of the race to keep the crowd cheering.brbrbrAt 430 p.m. the Downtown Easton Green Parade begins its procession through Harrison Dover and Washington streets featuring bagpipers The Highland Trio and the Decorated Golf Carts.
